The United Way of the Pennyrile sees the value in ensuring learning at all levels. It is why we financially support the Hopkinsville YMCA's Girl Power and Warrior Knights.
Girl Power is a teen mentoring program for girls ages 12-17. The YMCA collaborates with the Housing Authority of Hopkinsville and the Juvenile Justice Center. This eight-week program addresses pertinent topics for our female teenage population. We use many community resource people to present the material to the youth, which is consistent with other Girl Power programs around the state. We introduce facilities such as the YMCA to our children and families as a refuge for constructive involvement. Through this partnership, we plan to make a vast improvement in the lives of our young girls while introducing them to resources that can make a positive impact in their lives.
The motto for the Girl Power group is: "Learning to love yourself just the way you are, Committing to change your life for the better and sharing the attitude of girl power with others!"
Warrior Knights is an eight-week program for male teens ages 12-17 that addresses pertinent topics for our male teenage population. We use community resource people to present material to the youth, as well as the experiences of the group facilitator. Through this partnership, we plan to make a vast improvement in the lives of our young boys by introducing them to the resources that can make a positive influence on their lives.
The motto for the Warrior-Knights program is: "A winner is someone who recognizes his God-given talents, works his tail off to develop them into skills, and uses these skills to accomplish his goals." - Larry Bird.
